Let's Make a Placemat Part 1 and 2
Class 1
Sewing Level: Beginner and Beyond
Class Duration: About 50 minutes
Skills: Learn 3 ways to make half square triangle blocks, chain piecing, pressing quilt blocks, tips for piecing.
Pattern: None needed.
Fabric/Notions:
You will need a working sewing machine for this project
All-purpose polyester thread, my favorite is Gutermann Mara 100
Schmetz Microtex 70/10 sewing machine needles
Choose two quilting cottons, you'll need one fat quarter or 1/4 yard (0.23m) of of each per placemat.
Two placemats: 1/2 yard (0.46m) per fabric
Four placemats: 3/4 yard (0.68m) per fabric
Six placemats: 1 yard (0.91m) per fabric
Cutting:For 8-at-a-time HSTs: Cut 2x 8" (20.32cm) square blocks of each of your quilting cottons
For 4-at-a-time HSTs: Cut 1x 5 1/2" (13.97cm) square block of each of your quilting cottons
For 2-at-a-time HSTs: Cut 2x 4" (10.16cm) square blocks of each of your quilting cottons
Description: Let's make half square triangle placemats! HSTs are super versatile blocks and fun and satisfying to make. In this class we'll learn three ways to create HST blocks for a quilted placemat finishing at 18"x12" (45.72cm x 30.48cm). In the next class we'll finish our placemats with straight line quilting and binding. Here is a great blog with layout inspiration for your HST placemats!

You will need a working sewing machine for this project
All-purpose polyester thread, my favorite is Gutermann Mara 100
Schmetz Microtex 70/10 or 80/12 sewing machine needles
Your placemat quilt top(s)
Choose a quilting cotton for your backing, this will also be your binding fabric, about 3/4 yard per two placemats.
Cotton quilt batting, you just need a piece a little larger than your quilt top. This piece can be put together from scraps of batting if you have some to use up.
Description: Together we'll walk through putting together a quilt sandwich, basting and quilting our placemats. Then use the excess backing fabric to create the binding.
