Make a Classic Lined Tote Bag

Sewing Level: Beginner and Beyond
Class Duration: About an hour
Skills: Pressing, making straps, inserting a lining, edge stitching
Pattern: Measurements and construction are based on this YouTube tutorial from DIY Today's Sewing & Embroidery. I used this tutorial to make the medium size tote, but widened the straps on my sample. I altered the pattern to make the mini size.

Fabric/Notions:

  • You will need a working sewing machine for this project

  • All-purpose polyester thread, my favorite is Gutermann Mara 100

  • Schmetz Microtex 80/12 or Denim sewing machine needles

  • Fabric: Choose two canvas or twill fabrics and one quilting cotton. If you're new to sewing or want to use what you have in your stash you can use quilting cotton for the entire bag. Follow the yardage requirements and cutting instructions for each size below.

  • Medium Tote - 17" (43.2cm) wide, 12" (30.5cm) tall, 5 3/4" (14.6cm) deep, 8" (20.3cm) strap drop

    • Upper and pocket: 1/3 yard (0.3m) canvas or twill

      • Cut two pieces 18" (45.7cm) wide by 10" (25.4cm) long

      • Cut two pieces 6" (15.4cm) wide by 7" (17.8cm) tall

    • Bottom and straps: 2/3 yard (0.6m) canvas or twill

      • Cut two pieces 40" (101.6cm) long by 5" (12.7cm) wide

      • Cut one piece 18" (45.7cm) wide by 13" (33cm) long

    • Lining: 5/8 yard (0.57m) quilting cotton

      • Cut one piece 31 1/4" (79.4cm) long by 18" (45.7cm) wide

  • Mini Tote - 12" (30.5cm) wide, 10 1/2" (26.7cm) tall, 5 3/4 (14.6cm) deep, 11" (27.9cm) strap drop

    • Upper and pocket: 1/4 yard (.23m) canvas or twill

      • Cut two pieces 13 3/4" (35cm) wide by 8.5" (21.6cm) long

      • Cut two pieces 6" (15.4cm) wide by 7" (17.8cm) tall

    • Bottom and straps: 2/3 yard (0.6m) canvas or twill

      • Cut two pieces 40" (101.6cm) long by 5" (12.7cm) wide

      • Cut one piece 13 3/4" (35cm) wide by 13" (33cm) long

    • Lining: 1/2 yard (0.46m) quilting cotton

      • Cut one piece 27 3/4" (70.5cm) long by 13 3/4" (35cm) wide

Description: Inspired by the TJ's mini tote craze and the Sandy Liang x Baggu collab, we're going to make a classic lined tote bag in this class. Available in two size options, this is a timeless style that is easy to customize and make your own. It's great beginner-friendly project, but also great for anyone in need of a reusable bag. Bows are optional but highly recommended.
